In December I offered a free e-book version of my novel The Guardian of Detritus, as well as a one dollar donation for every free copy downloaded to One Tree Planted, a non-profit organization that plants a tree for every dollar they receive. That promotion was a mixed success – many Likes and Shares for the ad, lots of great comments, but very few downloads. In the meantime, a growing crisis in Australia put this minor setback into perspective – raging bushfires destroyed millions of acres and thousands of homes, killing dozens of people and a billion animals.
At this point a book promotion seems like a frivolous pursuit, but it’s the best way I have of helping out, so I am continuing it in a different way. I have donated $500 to plant 500 trees in Australia, where they are badly needed. That’s a lot more than the number of free books that were downloaded in December, but the situation – and my priorities – have changed. My book promotion has morphed into a fundraiser. Going forward, I will donate all the proceeds for every purchase of The Guardian of Detritus from Amazon to One Tree Planted. My goal is to donate an additional $2,020 to plant 2,020 trees in Australia in 2020.
